때로 음악은 소리를 내기 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라, 우리 안에 침묵을 만들어 주기 위해 존재한다.
임수영의 새 음반 《GREGORIAN CHANT IN SILENTIO》는 바로 그 침묵의 자리에서 시작한다. 화려한 기교와 거대한 음향으로 청중을 압도하기보다, 한 줄의 선율과 한마디의 라틴어 기도 안에 담긴 오래된 신앙의 숨결을 조용히 들려준다.
최근 레오 14세 교황은 성음악이 단순히 전례를 장식하는 음악이 아니라 기도하는 행위이며, 거행되는 신비에 참여하여 하느님께 마음을 맞추는 행위라고 강조했다. 또한 그레고리오 성가를 특별히 언급했는데, 교회가 간직해 온 성음악의 전통을 소중한 보물로 바라보며, 전례 안에서 노래와 함께 경건한 침묵 역시 중요하다고 말했다.
그러한 의미에서 《IN SILENTIO》라는 제목은 이 음반의 음악적 방향을 가장 함축적으로 보여준다.
이 음반에 수록된 여덟 곡은 서로 다른 기도이면서도 하나의 영적인 흐름을 이룬다. 첫 곡 [Ubi caritas]는 “사랑과 자비가 있는 곳에 하느님께서 계신다”는 고백으로 시작한다. 서로를 갈라놓는 다툼과 분열이 그치고 그 가운데 그리스도께서 계시기를 청하는 이 오래된 성가의 메시지는 오늘을 살아가는 우리에게도 깊은 의미를 갖는다.
이어지는 [Adoro te devote]에서는 성체 안에 숨어 계신 그리스도를 향한 깊은 흠숭과 신앙의 고백을 만난다. 보이는 것과 만져지는 것을 넘어 오직 믿음으로 그리스도를 바라보는 이 노래는 음악을 감상하는 행위를 넘어 자신의 내면을 돌아보게 한다.
[Pater noster]와 [Ave Maria]는 가장 친숙한 기도의 언어를 통해 인간의 마음을 하느님과 성모님께로 향하게 한다. 이어지는 [Attende, Domine]는 회개와 자비를 청하는 사순 시기의 깊은 기도이며, [Regina Caeli]에서는 부활의 기쁨이 짧지만 선명하게 빛난다.
[Veni Creator Spiritus]는 성령께서 우리의 마음과 감각을 밝혀 주시고 사랑을 부어 주시기를 청한다. 마지막으로 [Salve Regina]는 눈물의 골짜기를 지나 자비의 어머니께 도움을 청하는 인간의 마음을 노래하며 음반의 여정을 마무리한다.
이처럼 《IN SILENTIO》는 단순히 그레고리오 성가를 모아 놓은 음반이 아니다.
사랑에서 시작하여 흠숭으로 나아가고, 회개와 간청을 지나 부활과 성령의 빛을 만나며, 마침내 자비의 어머니에게 이르는 하나의 기도라고 할 수 있다.
그레고리오 성가는 오랜 세월 동안 교회의 기도와 함께 살아왔다. 그 선율에는 특정 시대의 유행을 넘어서는 절제와 겸손이 있다. 한 사람의 음악적 개성을 드러내기보다 말씀과 기도의 의미를 앞세우며, 소리와 소리 사이의 여백까지도 음악의 일부로 만든다.
그래서 그레고리오 성가를 부르는 일은 어쩌면 노래하는 동시에 침묵하는 일인지도 모른다.
《IN SILENTIO》에서 임수영이 바라는 것도 바로 그 지점에 있다.
음악이 자신을 드러내기보다 기도를 드러내고, 노래가 사람의 마음을 붙잡기보다 그 마음을 하느님께로 돌려놓기를 바라는 것이다.
그리고 그 침묵 속에서 아주 오래된 선율 하나가 다시 빛난다.
수백 년, 혹은 그보다 훨씬 더 오래된 기도의 언어가 오늘의 우리에게 다시 들려온다. 라틴어의 낯선 울림은 어느 순간 언어의 장벽을 넘어 하나의 기도가 되고, 단순한 선율은 인간의 마음 깊은 곳에 남아 있던 고요를 깨운다.
이 음반을 통해 노래하는 이의 바람은 크지 않다.
다만 조용한 기도가 더 멀리 전해지기를, 작은 목소리가 더 큰 울림이 되어 하늘에 닿기를 바란다.
침묵과 고요 속에서 빛나는 그레고리오 성가가 오늘을 살아가는 사람들의 지친 마음에 작은 빛이 되고, 그 빛이 다시 하느님을 향한 기도로 이어지기를.
그리고 이 오래된 성가의 아름다움이 국경과 언어를 넘어 더 많은 사람들에게 전해져, 누군가는 음악으로 듣고, 누군가는 기도로 듣고, 또 누군가는 자신의 내면에 찾아온 고요 속에서 하느님을 만나기를.
그것이 《IN SILENTIO》가 품고 있는 가장 깊은 소망이다.
침묵 속에서 노래하고,
고요 속에서 기도하며,
그 기도가 더 큰 울림이 되어 하늘에 닿기를.
《IN SILENTIO》는 그렇게 아주 조용하게 시작하지만, 그 여운은 오래 남는다.

IN SILENTIO ― A Prayer in the Silence

Sometimes music does not exist to fill the silence, but to lead us more deeply into it.
《GREGORIAN CHANT IN SILENTIO》, performed by SOOYOUNG LIM, is an album born from that sacred silence. Rather than seeking to overwhelm the listener with elaborate musical effects or grand sonorities, it turns toward the quiet power of Gregorian chant―where a simple melodic line, an ancient Latin text, and the breath of prayer come together.
Recently, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that sacred music is not merely an ornament added to the liturgy. Singing and playing sacred music are themselves acts of prayer, allowing the faithful to participate more deeply in the mystery being celebrated and to attune their hearts to God. He also recalled the extraordinary value of the Church’s musical heritage and stressed that reverent silence has an essential place alongside song.
In this sense, IN SILENTIO is more than the title of an album. It expresses its very spirit.
The album brings together eight sacred chants: “Ubi caritas,” “Adoro te devote,” “Pater noster,” “Ave Maria,” “Attende, Domine,” “Regina Caeli,” “Veni Creator Spiritus,” and “Salve Regina.”
The journey begins with “Ubi caritas,” whose central message is that where charity and love are, God is present. Its prayer for unity, reconciliation, and the presence of Christ among us speaks with remarkable relevance to the divided world of today.
In “Adoro te devote,” the listener encounters a deeply intimate confession of faith in Christ hidden beneath the sacramental signs. It is a prayer of adoration that moves beyond what the eyes can see and asks the heart to believe.
“Pater noster” and “Ave Maria” bring the listener into the familiar language of Christian prayer, while “Attende, Domine” turns toward repentance and the plea for mercy. “Regina Caeli” then opens a brief but radiant window onto the joy of the Resurrection.
With “Veni Creator Spiritus,” the prayer becomes a direct invocation of the Holy Spirit―to enlighten the senses, fill the heart with love, strengthen human weakness, and lead us toward peace. Finally, “Salve Regina” closes the album with the tender cry of humanity seeking mercy and consolation from the Mother of Mercy.
Taken together, these eight chants form something more than a collection of sacred pieces. They create a spiritual journey: from love to adoration, from repentance to hope, from Resurrection to the invocation of the Holy Spirit, and finally to Mary, the Mother of Mercy.
Gregorian chant has survived through centuries because it does not depend upon fashion. Its beauty lies in restraint. It does not demand attention for the performer; rather, it directs attention toward the sacred text and the prayer itself.
Perhaps this is why Gregorian chant can be experienced as both song and silence.
In IN SILENTIO, SOOYOUNG LIM seeks precisely this space: a place where music does not seek to glorify itself, but allows prayer to become audible; where the voice does not impose itself upon the listener, but gently turns the heart toward God.
The hope behind this recording is simple and profound:
May the Gregorian chant that shines quietly in silence and stillness become a greater resonance reaching toward heaven.
May these ancient melodies bring peace to weary hearts.
May someone listen to them not merely as music, but as prayer.
And may this prayer cross languages, cultures, and borders―allowing listeners around the world to discover, even for a brief moment, the sacred silence within themselves.
To sing in silence.
To pray in stillness.
And to let that prayer become a greater resonance reaching heaven.
